Tim Tebow's Football ad and a sane Feminist

Monday, February 1st, 2010

If you haven’t heard it, Tim Tebow is in an ad set to air during this week’s Super Bowl, and NOW is up in arms against it. Despite the fact that the commercial is (reportedly) non-confrontational, positive, and perhaps even inspiring, they’ve been demanding that CBS not allow it to air.

First, kudos to CBS for not bowing to their agenda.

Second, kudos to Sally Jenkins. Who’s she? A feminist with a brain, apparently. Normally I don’t recommend anyone read feminist ideologies except to point out where they stray from a Christian worldview, but in this case I’ll make an exception, because there’s a lot of wisdom here. It’s not worth trying to explain: you’ve just got to read this article on Tebow’s Super Bowl Ad isn’t intolerant, it’s critics are.

…or so they say. Sometimes, Youtube just has something so funny you can’t help but pass it on.

Self-help is really self-hurt

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

According to a recent BBC Article, some Canadians just published a report that using self-help positive statements actually makes people feel worse. It only helps people who already have high self esteem!

It would appear that you can’t really deceive yourself that easily. If you think you’re a loser, telling yourself that you’re not merely makes you dwell on the fact that you really do find yourself to be a loser, which is why you have to say these (evidently) false things to yourself about how great you are.

I think prayer works a lot this way. If you look at the Psalms, there are some pretty brutally honest prayers out there. If I pray with a false everything’s-great mentality, and try to ignore all the “negative” thoughts or emotions I’m experiencing, I end up feeling pretty lame and discouraged. On the other hand, after a good, brutally honest conversation with God, I find that I’m much more likely to be able to let go of it and trust Him to handle things in his way in his time.

How honest do you get with God?

LOST season finale

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

If you didn’t catch last night’s LOST season finale….don’t keep reading.

Holy crud it was amazing!

Some ruminations regarding all of this:

  • Is it a whole Jacob and Esau thing? Or is the story more Christ and Satan?
  • The dark man cannot kill Jacob himself, he has to get someone else to do it. (A Judas figure, who was chosen to be a follower of Jacob)
  • There are strong sentiments of election with Jacob’s choosing of those who would come to the Island
  • The one who lives in the shadow of the statue is “He who will save us all” or something along those lines, which definitely could be a reference to Christ.
  • Those who leave the Island after having been initiated into the Others can never return. (Rejection of the faith? Excommunication/expulsion from the Church?

Of course, this all very possibly grows out of my Christian worldview. It is much more likely that this is a secular “spiritual” story, with lots of references thrown in to different religions and beliefs in a way that will get everyone to make up their own reality. (Or is there a definite hint that buddhism is a failed attempt at finding truth and meaning with the Dharma initiative?)

A ton of questions still remain, obviously.

  • How did the Dharma initiative come to be? Were they brought by the dark man?
  • Jacob keeps telling people they have a choice, but it always seems that in those cases they are inevitably going to do what he wants. Did he want Ben to kill him? (again, Judas?)
  • Why were the babies dying?
  • What’s with all the lists?
  • Did the “Incident” cause the Swan’s predicament, or did it prevent it?
  • Whose eye was that? (Juliette’s?)
  • What’s the deal with Jack’s father “Christian”? Is this supposed to point at the resurrection of the dead?
  • Why the warnings to never bring Aaron back to the Island?
  • What was so special about Walt?

LOST has been a great ride. I hope we get a ton of answers next season!
